Comparing 5 Top-Tier High Yield Savings Accounts
Mar 19, 2024Comparing High-Yield Savings Accounts
In today's dynamic financial landscape, high-yield savings accounts have emerged as a popular option for individuals seeking better returns on their cash reserves. With several options available, it's essential to compare the pros, cons, sign-on bonuses, and interest rates of leading accounts to make an informed decision.
When researching options for opening a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA), it's crucial to consider various factors to ensure you're making the most suitable choice for your financial needs. These are the areas I look at when evaluating an HYSA:
- Interest Rate: Compare the interest rates offered by different banks to find the highest APY (Annual Percentage Yield), as it directly impacts the growth of your savings over time.
- Mobile App Features: Evaluate the features and functionality of the bank's mobile app, including the ability to check balances, transfer funds, deposit checks remotely, and set up alerts or notifications.
- Ease of Access to Money: Determine how quickly you can access your funds when needed, whether through online transfers, ATM withdrawals, or other means, and consider any potential limitations or delays.
- Sign-on Bonuses: Some banks offer sign-on bonuses for opening a new account and meeting certain requirements, such as maintaining a minimum balance for a specified period. Research whether any banks you're considering offer such incentives.
- Branch Access: If branch access is important to you, consider whether the bank has physical branches nearby and whether you require in-person banking services.
- ATM Access: Assess the bank's ATM network and any associated fees for out-of-network ATM usage, as well as whether the bank reimburses ATM fees incurred at other ATMs.
- Monthly Fees: Look into whether the HYSA charges monthly maintenance fees and if there are requirements to waive these fees, such as maintaining a minimum balance or meeting certain transaction criteria.
- Minimum Opening Deposit and Minimum Required Balance: Determine the minimum deposit required to open the account and whether there's a minimum balance requirement to avoid fees or earn the advertised interest rate.
By thoroughly researching these factors, you can make an informed decision when selecting a High Yield Savings Account that aligns with your financial goals and preferences. I’m currently looking for a new High Yield Savings Account and compiled my list of favorites.
Wealthfront has really pulled through with their HYSA offer. Their interest rate of 5.0% is one of the highest currently offered. They have a lot of great features including same day transfers, a network of fee-free ATMs, and automatic bill pay options. Their app/website is also cool in that they offer saving buckets features.
Wealthfront also offers investment accounts, so you could have many of your accounts in one company, which is nice for minimizing overwhelm and for easy access to money.
- Pros:
- Competitive APY (5.00% as of 3/19/2024), FDIC-insured up to $1 million, Automatic bill pay, Same day transfers, Savings buckets feature on app, Links to investment accounts, Offers a network of fee-free ATMs, No minimum or maximum balance to earn 5.00% APY, No Fees
- Cons: Limited customer service options.
- Sign-On Bonus: None currently available.
- Interest Rate: As of 3/19/2024, 5.00% APY.
2. Ally Bank:
Ally’s app is very robust and user friendly, which is their biggest pull in the HYSA realm. They offer a savings bucket feature to help save for different goals. They also have investment accounts. They have a surprise savings feature on their website, which can analyze linked accounts to determine if it’s beneficial to transfer that extra money to transfer into your HYSA.
- Pros: Competitive interest rates, no monthly fees, robust mobile app, ATM fee reimbursements, savings buckets feature.
- Cons: Limited branch access.
- Sign-On Bonus: None currently available.
- Interest Rate: As of 3/19, 4.25% APY.
3. Synchrony Bank:
I’ve had my high yield savings account with Synchrony since 2018. They have a high interest rate- 4.75% APY compared to Ally’s 4.35%, which is not an insignificant amount. However, their website is super basic. It also normally takes 3-5 days for me to move money to my external accounts, which is a downside.
Say you have 20,000 in your high-yield savings account: with 4.75% APY the interest earned is $975. Compare that to Ally’s 4.35% - annual interest of $865. So that’s over a $100 dollar difference just in interest earned over a year. At this stage in my financial journey, I don’t need the savings buckets feature enough to justify the $100 difference as I’m pretty good at understanding how to manage my savings for various goals. However, in my first 2 years of my journey of managing my money that would’ve been great and I probably would’ve gone with Ally.
Ultimately, what bothers me the most about Synchrony is slow transfer time from Synchrony to an external account.
- Pros: High interest rates, no monthly fees, ATM card available.
- Cons: No physical branches, basic website, slow transfer times.
- Sign-On Bonus: Varied promotions; check for current offers.
- Interest Rate: As of 3/19/24, 4.75% APY.
4. SoFi Money:
SoFi offers a high interest rate and sign up bonus. However, unlike wealthfront, you do have to meet requirements (setting up direct deposit) to be eligible for either. They have different tiers for bonus and APY based on how much you direct deposit into the account (for the full amount, it’s $5000 worth of direct deposit in first 30 days).
They also have nice features like bill pay and financial planning tools in the app/website.
SoFI does not offer investment accounts, so you’d need to go with a different company for investing.
- Pros: High-interest rate, no fees, fee-free ATM access worldwide, early access to paycheck (up to 2 days early), additional perks like financial planning tools, bill pay option
- Cons: No physical branches, have to meet requirements to get high interest and bonus
- Sign-On Bonus: $300 sign on bonus (as of 3/19/2024) if you meet qualifying direct deposit requirements.
- Interest Rate: As of 3/19/2024, 4.60% APY with qualifying deposit
Capital one offers a HYSA with an interest of 4.35%. Capital One also has branches and lounges around the world, opening the door for in person assistance. Their savings and checking accounts both offer early access to direct deposits (my paycheck posts 24 hours early).
They also have a robust mobile app with multiple accounts, including the Capital One 360 checking (which occasionally has a sign up bonus so be sure to check that out). If you have a Capital One Credit card, it’s all trackable in the same app, which is nice for consolidation purposes.
- Pros: no monthly fees, 24/7 customer service, in-person assistance available.
- Cons: slightly lower interest rate than others.
- Sign-On Bonus: None currently available.
- Interest Rate: As of 3/19/24, 4.35% APY.
My partner and I are opening a new joint high yield savings account for our mortgage payments, and we will likely go with Wealthfront. Given their features and interest rate, as well as their easy access to money, I am also currently considering switching my HYSA to Wealthfront from Synchrony.
Before selecting a high-yield savings account, consider your specific financial needs, including accessibility, interest rates, and additional features. Conduct thorough research and compare account details to find the best fit for your savings goals. Remember to review current promotions and bonuses to maximize your savings potential.
